Walt Disney World Railroad closed for refurbishment, and its Frontierland stop is still out
I used the train to reach the back of the park. That stop has been closed since July 2025. This fall's refurb takes the shuttle offline too, and Disney lists both Oct. 30 and November for its return.

As of Sept. 30, 2026: The Walt Disney World Railroad, the steam train at Magic Kingdom, closed Sept. 28. Disney’s website says it is expected to reopen in November 2026, but fan sites report that the park calendar lists hours for it starting Oct. 30. Check the My Disney Experience app, Disney’s phone app with each day’s hours, before you go. The train’s Frontierland stop, on the far side of the park, stays closed either way.
I cannot pick a favorite park. It depends on the mood more than the map. Some afternoons I want the classics, and Magic Kingdom still has them. The railroad is one. It is fun. It is kitschy. I am not sure how many people think of it as transportation, but I did. For years I rode the train to the back of the park for Splash Mountain and Big Thunder. Disney has since turned Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The habit stuck anyway.
How the train’s route got shorter
The Frontierland station, my old stop, closed long before this week. It has been out since July 7, 2025, because the track runs through the building site for two new areas: Piston Peak National Park, based on the Cars films, and a land built around Disney’s villains. Since then the train has run back and forth between two stops, about five minutes each way: the Main Street, U.S.A. station at the front gate, and the Storybook Circus station in Fantasyland, the fairy-tale area. On the ride to Fantasyland, a recording of Stitch, the blue alien from “Lilo & Stitch,” does the talking. The grand circle tour, the full loop around the park, is already gone. Disney says the full loop will come back “when the expansion of Magic Kingdom is complete.” No date on that.

What closed on Sept. 28
The shuttle itself stopped on Sept. 28. At the Main Street station, rolling flower planters now block about half the platform. Past them, the rails still show. Most entrances are roped off. One staircase stays open so guests can reach the machine upstairs that sells collectible souvenir medallions. Signs at the bottom and the top say the railroad is not operating.

Disney calls it a “routine refurbishment,” meaning scheduled repairs, and has not said what the crews are doing. In the mid-2010s the railroad closed for repairs about once a year. From 2013 to 2015, those closures came each fall and ran into November. Then the train shut down for four years, from December 2018 to December 2022, while Disney built a roller coaster, TRON Lightcycle Run, in its path. This closure lands in that same fall stretch, so it looks like the old yearly upkeep, though Disney has not confirmed it.
When it is supposed to come back
I found two reopening dates, and I cannot tell you which one is right. Disney’s own railroad page says the train is “expected to reopen November 2026.” Fan sites that follow Disney’s park calendar, including Disney Food Blog and Inside the Magic, list the train as back Oct. 30. WDW News Today, another fan site, was in the park on Sept. 28 and reported both: the website says November, and the calendar lists operating hours starting Oct. 30. If you are in the park for Halloween week, the app on your phone is the one to check the morning you go.
Still closed when the trains return
When the trains do roll again, expect the short shuttle to Storybook Circus, because the full loop is still gone. The Frontierland stop stays dark while the new lands are built. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is scheduled to close for its own repairs on Nov. 2, just days after the calendar’s Oct. 30 train date. Disney expects it back sometime in December without naming a day. If you were riding the shuttle to Fantasyland, plan to walk there in October. If you keep walking to Frontierland on or after Nov. 2, Tiana’s log ride will be closed too.
I will still ride it when the whistle is back. Kitschy is the point. Just do not plan the afternoon as if the Frontierland station were a stop. That one has been blocked for more than a year, and this closure does not reopen it.
