No Capes, No Equal: Edna Mode Is Back for Incredibles 3
Pixar confirmed Edna Mode's return in the Incredibles 3 first look at D23 2026, and for many fans she was the moment. A look at why the caped-crusader-hating costume designer steals every scene.
When Pixar showed its first look at Incredibles 3 at D23 2026, a four-foot-something figure in enormous glasses pulled focus from an entire super family. Edna Mode is back. For a lot of fans, she is the whole reason to start counting down to June 16, 2028.
Disney confirmed her return in the first-look art, where Edna stands with the full Parr family and Frozone. That settled the question every Incredibles fan asks first, before the plot, before the villain, before anything. The greatest costume designer in cinema is in.
A giant in a very small package
Edna is not a sidekick who wanders in for one laugh. She is a scene-stealer by design. In a series about a family learning to use its powers, she is the character with no powers at all, and she still walks out with every scene she is in. Her secret is conviction. She says impossible things with total certainty, and she turns out to be right almost every time.
The lines are a big part of it. “No capes” became a design rule the internet has been quoting for twenty years. So did “Luck favors the prepared, darling,” and the moment she stops coddling Helen and tells her to go save her marriage and her family with more backbone than any speech in the film. The timing is Pixar at its sharpest, quick and dry and never oversold.
The voice behind the darling
Much of that magic is one person. Writer and director Brad Bird voices Edna himself, a bit of casting that started almost by accident and became one of the best running jokes in the films. He gives her a clipped, theatrical rhythm that makes even a throwaway line land. When people say Edna steals the movie, they are also saying Bird does.
Her return was one of the reveal’s biggest talking points, and it is easy to see why. Incredibles 2 crossed 1.2 billion dollars worldwide in 2018, and Edna was a highlight of both films. Bringing her back is Pixar telling fans it knows exactly what they love.
Peter Sohn directs Incredibles 3, with Brad Bird producing and, happily, still holding the microphone for Edna. It is a long wait until 2028, but the darling of every Incredibles fan is officially on the call sheet.
