Disney Cruise Line’s seasonal takeover returns for 2026 with seven ships, named Pumpkin Trees, exclusive character costumes, and two firsts: the Disney Destiny’s debut season and a second ship sailing the celebration out of San Diego. Here is what the week actually delivers.
The first thing you notice is the light. Not the harsh glare of a costume-store aisle, but a warm amber glow that makes the Grand Hall feel like an autumn evening even though you are miles from shore. Garlands of leaves and ribbon climb the staircases, portholes wear temporary overlays of jack-o’-lanterns and classic villains, and right in the center stands the Pumpkin Tree, already the unofficial star of the voyage.
This is Halloween on the High Seas, Disney Cruise Line’s takeover of select sailings from September through late October. It is not a park party transplanted to a ship. It is a slower, more immersive version of the holiday that trades jump scares for storytelling, costumes that invite participation, and a floating atmosphere that manages to feel both cozy and enchanted.

There are no haunted houses, no fog machines blasting at ankle height, and no attempt to frighten younger guests. Instead the ships get an autumnal makeover: décor, limited-time desserts and drinks, character costumes that surface only during these sailings, and a handful of signature events that give the week a clear arc.
The celebration is not on every fall sailing. Disney marks the eligible itineraries with pumpkin icons and a filterable Halloween on the High Seas tag on its site. Booking without checking that filter is the most common way a family ends up on an ordinary cruise in October.
The Pumpkin Trees, and why they carry the story
Every participating ship places a large, elaborately carved Pumpkin Tree in its Grand Hall or atrium. Each one has a name, a personality, and a short legend revealed during a lighting ceremony, usually on the first evening. The trees are the visual and narrative center of the whole season.

Costumes, characters, and the Mouse-querade
Guests are actively encouraged to dress up, especially on the night of Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party, a costume dance on an upper deck where Mickey, Minnie, and friends appear in their Halloween finest. The current lineup includes bat-winged looks for Mickey and Minnie and a pair of spider costumes for Donald and Daisy. Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle Cow also turn up as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus, a casting that draws long but good-natured lines. On the Disney Wish, the sisters headline their own show, Who’s Behind the Curtain?
Trick-or-treating is organized and route-based rather than a free-for-all. Crew members staff stations with themed candy along a set path, timed so families with young children can take part without a late night. Crafts, villain-themed drawing sessions, and music trivia fill the daytime schedule, and specialty desserts and themed “sinister sips” join the menus for the length of the sailing.
Seven ships, and two firsts for 2026
In 2026 the celebration reaches seven vessels: Fantasy, Dream, Wonder, Magic, Wish, Treasure, and, for the first time, the Disney Destiny. The Destiny’s heroes-and-villains design theme makes it a natural fit, and because its Pumpkin Tree has not been named yet, the ship will debut an entirely new character this fall.
The second first is on the other coast. Most sailings still depart Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale for three to seven nights, calling at ports such as Nassau, Disney Castaway Cay, and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, with some itineraries visiting both private islands. But in 2026 the Disney Magic joins the Wonder in San Diego, the first time two ships offer the celebration on Baja and Mexican Riviera routes from the West Coast. Theme-park Halloween events can feel crowded and transactional. Halloween on the High Seas works because the ship itself becomes the set. A capped guest list, a multi-day arc, and shared rituals like the tree lighting, costume night, and trick-or-treat route create a sense of temporary community that is hard to manufacture on land. For families who want the holiday without the crush, it is one of the more reliable options Disney currently offers.
How it feels different from the parks
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a single-night ticketed event with high density and a clear end time. Halloween on the High Seas is a multi-day immersion. You wake up to the same decorated atrium, see the same characters in costume across several days, and watch the outfits guests wear evolve from casual to full commitment by the Mouse-querade. The result is less spectacle and more lived-in atmosphere, which is why many repeat cruisers treat these sailings as an annual tradition rather than a one-off novelty.
Practical notes for 2026
Book early. The most popular three- and four-night Bahamian sailings on the Wish and Fantasy tend to fill first. Florida-resident and other restricted rates appear periodically, so watch the official site and authorized travel agents. Costumes are welcome but must follow Disney Cruise Line’s standard rules: no realistic-looking weapons, and no full-face masks that hide an adult’s identity in most public areas. Once you are onboard, the Navigator app lists the exact timing of the tree lighting, the Mouse-querade, and the trick-or-treat route.
The season does not replace the core Disney Cruise product. Rotational dining, the Broadway-style shows, and the private-island day all still happen. Halloween is layered on top of the usual programming rather than substituted for it.
For families who already love Disney Cruise Line, this is the version of the holiday that best fits the brand’s strengths: storytelling, shared ritual, and a controlled setting where the magic feels personal rather than industrial. The 2026 season simply spreads that formula across more of the fleet, including a brand-new ship still inventing its own traditions.
