Shanghai Disneyland’s Spider-Man Coaster Is Taking Shape
A Spider-Man coaster is under construction at Shanghai Disneyland. Here is what has been announced and the latest on its progress.
A loop of bright red steel now curls over a construction site on the eastern edge of Shanghai Disneyland, just past Zootopia. That track belongs to the park’s Spider-Man coaster, and as of this summer, every piece of it is bolted into place. Two years ago it was a rendering on a stage. Now it is a shape you can see from a distance.
Disney first revealed the ride at D23 in Anaheim on August 10, 2024. Josh D’Amaro, who runs the parks division, framed it as Shanghai Disneyland’s first major attraction built to tell a Marvel story. The premise is small and clean. Peter Parker gets himself into trouble, you climb aboard, and the coaster is your way out. The company’s own blog kept it that simple: “Peter Parker has gotten himself into a bit of a tough situation, and we’re along for the adventure as we join him on a high-speed coaster ride to get out of trouble.” So a thrill ride with a rescue draped over it, which is a very Disney way to build a roller coaster.
How fast it’s moved
The coaster is the heart of what will become Shanghai Disneyland’s ninth themed land, the first new one since Zootopia opened. That is the part worth celebrating. This project has put steel in the ground. Shanghai made the groundbreaking public through an Instagram post on May 18, 2025, and from there the pace has been remarkable for a park expansion of this size.
By April 2026, the first sections of ride track had gone up, clear evidence of a real coaster taking shape. Then came the milestone. In mid-June 2026, during the resort’s tenth anniversary celebrations, the final piece of that red track was installed, completing the full circuit. Finished track is one big step, with more still ahead. There are trains to test, buildings to close in, theming to hang, and months of quiet work that rarely makes a photo. The full skeleton of the ride now stands, and that is a major achievement.
So when can fans ride it. An official opening date is still to come. The timeframe attached to this project in coverage is the second half of 2027, reported as a working expectation rather than a date the company has confirmed. It is best treated as a well-informed report, with plenty of track already in place and an official date still to be announced. The name of the land is also still to be revealed, part of the fun still ahead.
For now, the picture is clear enough. Of everything Disney lined up at D23 2024, this is the one you can watch grow in real time, one steel span at a time, on the far side of a park that keeps adding rooms to the house.
